Greta Thunberg arrested at pro-Palestine protest

GRETA Thunberg has been arrested at a protest against the war in Gaza, according to reports.

Danish police arrested six people at the University of Copenhagen on Wednesday, after 20 people blocked the entrance to a building and three entered, a police spokesperson said.

Police declined to confirm the identities of those arrested, but a spokesperson for Students Against the Occupation – the group which organised the demonstration – said Thunberg (below) was one of those held.

News outlet Ekstra Bladet published a picture of Thunberg, 21, wearing what appeared to be handcuffs and a black-and-white keffiyeh, a symbol of solidarity with Palestinians.

The environmental activist shared images on social media platform Instagram of riot police entering a building where Students Against the Occupation was staging the protest.

A spokesperson for Copenhagen police said: “I can’t confirm the names of those arrested, but six people have been arrested in connection with the demonstration.

“They are suspected of forcing their way into the building and blocking the entrance.”

In a statement shared on Instagram, Students Against the Occupation said: “While the situation in Palestine only gets worse, the University of Copenhagen continues cooperation with academic institutions in Israel.

“We are occupying [the university’s] central administration with one demand: academic boycott now.”

Students across Europe and the US have staged demonstrations to protest against their university’s relationship with Israel, calling on management to divest from Israeli companies.

Student encampments were set up at universities across Scotland earlier this year, including in Edinburgh and Aberdeen.
