Greggs in bizarre sandwich stunt ahead of Mexico v England World Cup clash

GREGGS has withdrawn a range of items from its stores ahead of England's World Cup clash against Mexico in a bizarre stunt.

The popular bakery announced that it had removed and "benched" its entire Mexican chicken sandwich range from all English shops for the duration of Sunday.

Greggs explained that the decision was due to one reason: "IT'S COMING HOME."

A post shared by Greggs (@greggs_official)

The following items were not available in Greggs shops in England on Sunday:

  • Mexican Chicken Flatbread
  • Mexican Chicken Oval Bite
  • Mexican Chicken Baguette

The bakery clarified that the Mexican chicken sandwich range would still be available in stores in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, because "we know whose side you're on".

"Thank you for your understanding on this important matter", a post on social media signed off.

The range is due to be reinstated in English stores on Monday, "pending the result".

Social media users have shown a mixed response to the stunt, with some appearing baffled.

One user commented: "This is genuinely one of the weirdest marketing stunts I’ve ever seen."

Another said: "Like the idea of highlighting the Mexican sandwich range, but imo [in my opinion] this idea reads quite low hanging fruit and makes Greggs come across as negative and bitter (which it's not)."

A third simply wrote: "Can't wait for England to get pumped".

But some Mexican fans appeared to get in on the joke, with one user writing: "We the Mexicans, won’t be drinking any English tea until further notice…."

England will take on Mexico in the last 16 of the World Cup at 1am on Monday, July 6.

The National previously told how Mexico fans were seen outside the England team's hotel setting off fireworks and blaring music in an attempt to disturb Thomas Tuchel's squad.

The team were reportedly unfazed, however, saying they found it "amusing rather than intimidating".
