Greggs bakeries shut across UK as IT issues affect payments

Greggs bakeries around the UK have reportedly shut on Wednesday morning amid reports of IT issues.

Customers in cities including London, Cardiff and Manchester reported on X their local outlets had closed. Other outlets were said to be open but only accepting cash.

One X user said: “Greggs in Westminster closed. Problem with tills. Is this Nationwide or just local?”Another replied: “Greggs near Cardiff Central has same issue”.

Another X user said: “Greggs this morning cash only! Sitting here with my coffee watching almost everyone have to walk out”.

A Greggs spokesperson told the BBC: "We are currently experiencing issues accepting payments in our shops. We are working to resolve this as soon as possible."

The popular high street bakery chain has more than 2,300 branches across the UK, according to its website. The number of branches closed on Wednesday morning has not been confirmed.

The incident comes days after similar technical outages at McDonald’s, as well as supermarket chains Sainsbury’s and Tesco.

On Saturday, Sainsbury’s customers were unable to make contactless payments following an overnight software update and the firm was not able to fulfil the “vast majority” of online deliveries.

The same day, Tesco had to cancel some online orders that were due for delivery.

Both chains apologised to customers and later said the unrelated issues were resolved.

On Friday morning, McDonald’s customers in the UK and around the world complained after a number of outlets were unable to serve food due to an IT system outage. The fast food chain later said the issue had been resolved.
