Rep. Greg Murphy said people who have lived in the United States for decades can become "collateral damage" in immigration enforcement, then declared, "Thank God we're getting rid of the garbage that's in our country."
The North Carolina Republican made the comments Wednesday on Newsmax's Wake Up America Early, while discussing Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin's claim that the Trump administration had arrested 2,220 people it identified as known terrorists. Murphy called that figure "terrifying" before referring to "stories about individuals who've been here for 35 years."
