Greetings card giant Clintons have closed their Ayr store after denying they would shut it down earlier this year.
The High Street chain outlet has stopped operating after bosses cited the branch had no 'long-term sustainable future'.
Bosses say they took the decision not to extend the lease after holding crunch talks with landlords.
In January, rumours were sparked that Clintons would be on the move after To Let signs appeared.
However, chiefs then told how they intended to continue to trade in the town after many years on the main thoroughfare.
But today, a spokesperson for Clintons confirmed another blow to the High Street after social media images circulated showing the shop 'gutted' with just empty boxes left in the unit.
A spokesperson from Clintons told Ayrshire Live: “We regularly review the leases in our store portfolio and our focus is always on trying to keep our businesses integrated within the communities we serve.
"After careful consideration and discussions with our landlords, we felt in this instance the store did not have a long-term sustainable future, so we took the decision not to extend the lease.”
