A young environmental engineer has been chosen as the Greens candidate for a hotly-contested Melbourne seat after the party's sitting MP resigned in controversy.
The party announced Angelica Di Camillo, who previously ran for the Greens in the now-abolished federal seat of Higgins, as their candidate for the state seat of Prahran.
The Greens will battle the Liberal Party for the seat left vacant when former Greens MP Sam Hibbins resigned from the party after admitting to an affair with a staffer.
He then resigned from parliament following revelations he had been barred from the parliamentary intern program over alleged inappropriate behaviour with an intern.
"As a young person living in St Kilda East, I know our community is struggling," Ms Di Camillo said on Monday.
"Rent keeps going up, young people have given up on the dream of ever owning a home and they're worried about the climate."
The Greens held a 12 per cent margin after preferences with Mr Hibbins, but it's a seat to watch with all major parties holding it during the last 20 years.
Labor is not fielding a candidate and a date for the by-election is yet to be announced.
