- Sir Keir Starmer has expressed his shock at the actions of Green Party deputy leader Mothin Ali after he attended a rally protesting the US killing of Iran’s Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
- Sir Keir said it was “important that all of us set our face against antisemitism” and added that the Greens’ position on Nato regarding negotiations with Putin over nuclear weapons was “contrary to the British national interest”.
- Conservative former minister Sir Alec Shelbrooke also expressed his dismay at Ali’s attendance at the rally and said “the hatred and the fear that runs through Leeds now being whipped up at times by councillor Mothin is a disgrace”.
- Mr Shelbrooke also claimed that the Green Party had become “a magnet for all of the people that had been kicked out of the Labour Party”.
- On the topic of the Iran war, Starmer later told MPs that he was not prepared to commit Britain’s military service people to action unless he was sure that any actions were lawful.
