Green Party candidate in London elections shared conspiracy theory over Golders Green arson attack

A Green Party candidate standing in London at the upcoming local elections shared a conspiracy theory about the arson attack on Jewish community ambulances.

Tope Olawoyin, a candidate for the Marshalls & Rise Park in Havering on May 7, suggested the incident, which saw four Hatzola ambulances set alight last week, could have been orchestrated by members of the Jewish community.

Two British men, aged 47 and 45, were arrested on Wednesday on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life in connection with the attack in Golders Green and have been bailed until next month.

Police are treating the incident as an antisemitic hate crime.

Ms Olawoyin wrote a post on her now private X account, which stated: “I can say with almost absolute certainty that the men arrested are white, probably even Jewish, because we all know for a fact that if they weren't their names and pictures would be EVERYWHERE."

The four Hatzola ambulances in the car park of a synagogue in Golders Green were burnt down in the early hours of Monday, March 23.

There is no evidence that members of the Jewish community carried out the attack.

The Standard has tried to contact Ms Olawoyin.

A Green Party source told the Standard: "Green Party representatives have been clear in standing in solidarity with Jewish communities as they face a heightened level of threats and violence and our leaders have made public comments expressing solidarity with the Jewish community over the Golders Green attack."

It comes after messages from a separate leaked WhatsApp group appeared to show Green Party activists referring to Jewish people as "an abomination to this planet".

Members of Greens for Palestine also suggested the arson attack in Golders Green was potentially a "false flag" operation.

The Campaign Against Antisemitism (CAA) said the messages, first reported by the Telegraph, were “straight out of Nazi Germany”.

A spokesperson for Green Party said the statements do “not represent the views of the Green Party”.

Last week the Liberal Democrats suspended Dr Bharat Pankhania, a councillor and the mayor of Bath, after he shared posts that incorrectly claimed the arson attack was insurance fraud and an "Israeli false flag operation".

The councillor deleted the posts and apologised "profusely" for his actions.

Israel has raised concerns that antisemitism is "spreading like wildfire" in the UK, following the incident in Golders Green.

Israeli foreign minister Gideon Sa'ar said the situation in Britain "requires treatment at its roots", during a phone call with Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper.

The UK Government pledged its "unwavering commitment" to tackle rising antisemitism in response to the incident, with Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer calling for communities to "all stand together".

In a post on X, Mr Sa'ar said: "In a call with British Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper, I expressed concern over the rise in violent antisemitic incidents in the UK.

"I referred to the arson attack on ambulances belonging to the 'Hatzalah' organisation last week.

"Antisemitism in the UK, as well as in other countries, is spreading like wildfire and requires treatment at its roots.

"I mentioned the recent article by former UK prime minister Tony Blair, which pointed to the connection between the irresponsible delegitimisation of Israel and the rise of antisemitism in the West."
