Greece make u-turn on Covid rule easing affecting thousands of Irish passengers

There will be disappointment for any Irish passengers headed to Greece this weekend, as the government backtracks on the easing of their Covid rules.

Earlier this month, health minister Thanos Plevris suggested that all Covid entry rules would be done away with from May 1, however this is no longer the case.

Speaking on April 12 he had highlighted that Covid cases in Greece were falling, and so they would "proceed with the suspension of the protection measures put in place from May 1."

However, some sources have now said that an end of Covid entry rules won’t come into effect this weekend.

The only rule that will be eased from the bank holiday is the need for vaccine certificates for entry to bars and restaurants.

Irish passengers will therefore still need to show proof of vaccination at the border and before boarding their flight out this weekend.

However unvaccinated Irish travellers can still be granted entry at the border but must show proof of a professionally administered negative rapid Covid test taken no more than 24 hours before arrival or proof of a professionally administered negative PCR test taken no more than 72 hours before arrival.

A source told Independent UK that there had been a "misunderstanding," and said the only rule being eased as of May 1, is that “no proof of vaccination or recovery will be required to enter any indoor and outdoor venues.”

Despite the slight easing in rules, this is likely to come as a blow to thousands of Irish passengers who were planning to travel to Greece over the May bank holiday weekend tomorrow.
