Greece is the word for Aldi shoppers in rush to snap up summer tipples

Greece is the word for customers of budget supermarket Aldi who are rushing to get hold of the chain's latest summer wine range. The new Grecian selection starts at just £6.99 and includes wines from one of the country's best producers, including Alpha Estate, usually found in the cellars of high-end restaurants.

Julie Ashfield, managing director of buying, said: “At Aldi, we have a reputation as a destination for unexpected varietals and rare wine regions that produce outstanding quality and value wines. Seeing the incredible amount of interest and excitement our Greek wines have generated so far shows just how popular this region is becoming.

"The huge success of the Assyrtiko, which launched last year, encouraged us to expand our line-up to include even more delicious Greek varieties for shoppers to pop in their trollies.”

Wine expert and the face of Aldi Wine School, Sam Caporn, has tried and tested each offering, so customers can be confident with their choices. Back by popular demand as a new vintage, the crisp and dry white Aspri Petra Greek Assyrtiko 2021 (£6.99, 75cl).

Sam said: “It is youthfully exuberant with plenty of pear and apricot notes that are well-balanced by a brisker lemon zest acidity. The palate has a nectarine and yellow plum ripeness and herbal finish.”

Next up is the Alpha Estate Greek Chardonnay 2018 (£14.99, 75cl, which is billed as an attractive spicy nose with notes of cinnamon and nutmeg. The palate is oaky yet elegant and boasts flavours of pineapple with fresh lemony acidity.

The Athlon Greek Agiorgitiko 2018 (£7.49, 75cl) is pale in colour with notes of herbs, red cherry and a pepper nose along with a suggestion of spice and raspberry for a structured finish. It is the idyllic partner for lamb dishes.

Finishing the line-up is the Alpha Estate Greek Pinot Noir 2018 (£14.99, 75cl), which is classic, light, and delicate in colour with red berry fruits on the nose and juicy strawberry, red cherry and spice on the palate. Pinot Noir grapes from Northern Greece give this wine its great intensity, balance and structure.

The new wines will be joining Aldi’s Greek Agiorghitiko (£10.99, 75cl). This Grecian delight is packed with flavours of red fruits and spices, complimented by a hint of vanilla and black pepper. Aldi’s full selection of Greek wines is available in stores and/or online now.
