Greater Manchester weather forecast for Sunday after snow hits region and shuts runways

It is set to be another freezing cold day in Greater Manchester tomorrow as the snap cold continues.

Snow fell over much of the region today (Saturday) as temperatures plummeted to below freezing. This led to both runways at Manchester Airport being closed with cancellations and delays to flights coming both in and out of the airport.

A Met Office yellow weather for snow and ice for our region remains in place until 12pm tomorrow, though no more of the white stuff is forecast to fall after this evening. Forecasters predict there may be some more light show showers at around 5pm tonight before overcast conditions set in.

Overnight, temperatures will drop to 2C. By 8am tomorrow morning, forecasters predict the mercury will have dropped to 1C.

It is set to be a mostly cloudy day, with no rain or snow currently forecast to fall. The temperature throughout the day will remain low average at around 2C.

At around 7pm tomorrow, the mercury will drop to zero. The Met Office has warned of disruption while the weather warning remains in place, with icy roads likely to cause problems.

People have been urged to plan ahead before they travel. Across the UK, the cold weather is expected to continue into next week with the risk of sleet and snow at times continuing.

Met Office chief meteorologist Steve Willington said: "It is staying cold with daytime temperatures remaining only a few degrees above freezing in many places over the coming days and overnight temperatures dropping to -10°C or lower in isolated spots.

"Although below average, these temperatures are not that unusual for this time of year. There is still a risk we could see some freezing fog in places particularly southern England, especially for Sunday and Monday mornings.

"And there is also a small risk of a band of sleet or snow moving into the far Southeast on Sunday. If this happens it could potentially bring some disruption, especially to rush hour on Monday. A warning has been issued."
