Greater Manchester schools announce closures and early finish times amid heatwave

Schools across Greater Manchester have announced closures and early finish times amid the heatwave. Extreme temperatures have been affecting the region, where a rare red weather warning is in place until Tuesday night.

We reported earlier how schools said they were putting measures in place to prepare for the unprecedented heat. This included moving pupils out of classrooms and cancelling PE lessons.

But for some, schools have now decided to either shorten the school day, or keep pupils at home altogether.

Bridge Hall Primary School in Stockport closed early today - shutting at 1.30pm - and will be doing the same tomorrow. Asking for children to arrive for 8.30am, it said in a letter to parents: "We know that the classrooms get hotter in the afternoon and so we will be closing the school early, at 1.30pm, on Monday and Tuesday."

Falinge Park High in Rochdale did the same, closing at 12.30pm today and announcing it will close from 12pm tomorrow, with periods 4 and 5 taking place on Google Classroom.

Headteacher Janice Allen said 'it isn't about being 'soft' or not wanting to be in school, it about whether compelling learning can actually take place and the health impact on children'.

Lime Tree Primary Academy, in Sale Moor, Trafford, is also closing from 12 noon on Tuesday, with Trafford Council saying it was an 'operational decision' taken by the leadership and Bright Futures Educational Trust.

And Sale High has decided it is safer to close altogether on Tuesday.

In a message sent to parents shortly before 2pm on Monday, headteacher Jayne O'Grady said: "As the day has progressed, the temperature within the building has obviously increased. We started this morning with a cool building, as the heat builds, we can predict that the temperature overnight will not drop sufficiently enough to cool the building, and tomorrow is due to be even hotter.

"Therefore, with regret, I have made the decision that it will not be in the best interest of students or staff to attend tomorrow."

She said that work would be set on the homework platform Satchel One for students to complete, adding: "Wednesday is forecast to be much, much cooler and we will return on Wednesday 20th July.

"Apologies for the disruption, but as you can understand the health and safety of our students must be paramount."

A parent with one child at both schools - Sale High and Lime Tree - said she understood the decisions, but believes more notice could have been given where younger ones are concerned.

"I'm OK with my high school child as she's old enough to look after herself ," she said. "But with my other child in primary finishing at 12pm, that's set me back at work. More notice should have been given, it's been expected for ages so they had enough notice to put the rule in place."
