Greater Manchester forecast snow next week as temperature set to drop below zero

Greater Manchester could see more snow next week as temperatures are set to plummet below zero.

The Met Office predicts that snow is likely to fall in some parts of the UK, with wintry showers expected in the coming days. Temperatures are likely to fall below zero in Manchester by Monday, with highs of just 4C expected at the start of the week.

Some boroughs are likely to see snow or sleet falling as the temperatures drop as low as -1C overnight. The BBC weather forecast predicts snow in Greater Manchester from around 2pm on Monday with light snow showers expected until the following morning.

Temperatures during the day are likely to peak at around 3C on Monday, dropping to 0C overnight and staying cold throughout Tuesday, according to the BBC. Further snow could fall on Thursday morning, forecasters said.

Slightly warmer temperatures are then expected by the time the weekend comes around, with highs of 8C and some light rain forecast on Friday, January 20.

According to the BBC's long-range forecast, temperatures are likely to be below average next week with a chance of snow, sleet, hail and strong winds. For the period between Monday, January 16, and Sunday, January 22, the BBC said: "Early next week there are hints of a transitory high pressure ridge delivering drier and calmer conditions for a day or two, with higher chances of fog and sharp frosts as temperatures drop below the January average. However, any such high pressure influence should soon wane as an unsettled regime most probably takes over once again.

"There is a chance that colder conditions will continue through midweek, with northwesterly winds, strong at times, bringing rain, sleet, snow and hail showers, or more persistent wintry precipitation in places. The length of any colder spell is uncertain but, later in the week a milder turn is indicated, with Atlantic low pressure systems resuming their march across the UK, bringing more of a west to southwesterly flow of winds, with periods of rain interspersed with showery air masses."

The Met Office paints a similar picture. For the period between Tuesday, January 17, and Thursday, January 26, forecasters said: "Tuesday will see a continuation of sunny spells and wintry showers in many central and northern areas, with an area of rain, sleet and snow perhaps affecting some southern Britain for a time. Windy in the southwest with a chance of gales here.

"Further into the week colder conditions than of late are expected to continue, with overnight frost and some further wintry showers and ice. However, with time, there are signs that it will turn milder again as weather systems run in from the west, bringing further rain, especially to the west and northwest, and perhaps preceded by snow initially, along with the potential for strong winds or gales at times."

Looking towards the end of the month, the Met Office said more settled conditions are likely, but northern areas may see spells of strong wind and rain. At the beginning of February, a return to unsettled conditions is most likely, with some colder temperatures expected, forecasters said.
