Greater Manchester cafe offers a lettuce with every coffee as a cheeky dig at Liz Truss

A cafe in Levenshulme has been offering its customers a free lettuce with every coffee following Liz Truss' resignation. Aunty Ji's posted the tongue-in-cheek promotion on their Instagram story earlier this afternoon (Friday October 21).

The post read: 'Free lettuce with every coffee or chai - this Friday only', alongside a photograph of an iceberg lettuce and a hot drink on one of the tables in the venue. It follows the Daily Star livestreaming a Tesco-bought lettuce in a blonde wig to see if it could outlast the Prime Minister - which it did.

The stunt was inspired by weekly newspaper Economist, which had earlier quipped that Truss’s tenure in Downing Street threatened to be “roughly the shelf-life of a lettuce”.

Aunty Ji's owner Zee Ahmed described his offer as a 'light humoured take on things'. He told the Manchester Evening News: "She's had four or five weeks and she's really screwed it up.

"Real people are going to struggle because of what's happened. We can't do anything to change that but we can try and give people a laugh."

Zee said that he bought two big boxes and had around 30 lettuces. If he has any left by tomorrow, he has generously offered to donate them to a food bank. "That was the plan all along really," he added. "We take out place in our society and the local community quite seriously."
