‘Great sign’ for a rookie: Alex Caruso praises Ayo Dosunmu’s defense

Last season was quite the roller-coaster for the Chicago Bulls.

The Bulls started out the first quarter of the season as the hottest team in the Eastern Conference. Once 2022 hit, Chicago took a massive hit as injuries started to cripple their rotation.

Lonzo Ball, Alex Caruso, and Patrick Williams all missed significant time, along with Zach LaVine being hindered with a knee injury in the second-half of the season.

With those injuries, rookie Ayo Dosunmu stepped in and was a big contributor for Billy Donovan.

Alex Caruso spoke with Ethan Fuller of BasketballNews.com and shared praised for Dosunmu’s ability to step in and play serious minutes, especially his performance on the defensive end.

“Ayo was, basically all last year, just playing off the feel. Your first year in the league, you don’t understand concepts really. You don’t understand coverages. You’re seeing guys play, and you’re playing against guys for the first time. You’re seeing their best moves for the first time; they’re probably going to beat you most of the time. So for him to be able to compete the way he did last year on defense is a great sign for a guy in his first year.”

In his rookie season, Dosnumu averaged 8.8 points, 2.8 rebounds, and 3.3 assists per game while earning second team All-Rookie honors.

Heading into the 2022-23 season, Dosunmu could be looking at a significant role early on with the uncertainty of Lonzo’s availability as he continues to deal with knee discomfort.
