The most insufferable people in your life are about to get a whole lot more annoying — in the best way possible, of course. Glee creator Ryan Murphy has threatened teased a potential reboot of the chaotic musical series, 11 years after it ended its run and left fans with a New Directions-shaped hole in their hearts.
Murphy — who went on to create the hit franchises American Horror Story, Monster and Love Story post-Glee — told PEOPLE at the premiere of his latest series, The Shards, that a Glee revival isn’t off the cards.
He said he “loved” everyone in the cast (wish I could say the same) and “had a great time making that show”, which ran from 2009 to 2015 and launched Lea Michele, Darren Criss, Chris Colfer, Amber Riley and Jonathan Groff to global superstardom.
“That show is interesting because it’s come back around. So many young people now watch it. And I’m like, ‘Maybe we should revisit that show’,” he remarked.
“My nostalgia and love for that show is enough that I’m like, ‘Well, maybe people would like to see a new incarnation of that in some capacity.’ So yeah, I love that show, and I loved what it became and what it meant to so many people.”
In case you somehow forgot what Glee was about, or simply never got around to watching the masterpiece, the series followed a group of outcast students in a high school Glee club who competed in choir championships, faced bullying from their cohorts and sang about the highs and lows of adolescence.
The series was groundbreaking at the time for dealing with a range of complex issues, including sexuality, disability, race, body image, teen pregnancy and domestic violence, although viewers have retrospectively criticised the often problematic ways it tackled the subject matter.
As well as featuring covers of popular songs and show tunes that were often better than the original (fight me), Glee also became famous for its iconic guest stars throughout the six-season run, including Britney Spears, Gwyneth Paltrow, Ricky Martin, Idina Menzel, Kristen Chenoweth, Whoopi Goldberg, Demi Lovato, Adam Lambert and Sarah Jessica Parker.

Glee fans are divided over the potential reboot
Ryan Murphy’s tease of a Glee revival has received a mixed reaction from fans of the series, with some (including myself) excited by the potential of Rachel Berry (Michele) belting out Chappell Roan and Olivia Rodrigo’s hits, and others saying it’s way too soon for a reboot.
Many viewers have also noted that the show would not be the same without cast members Naya Rivera and Corey Monteith, who have since passed away.

A Glee revival wouldn’t be too surprising considering other popular 2000s shows like Gossip Girl, Malcolm in the Middle and Scrubs have all had the reboot treatment in recent years.
However, given how packed Ryan Murphy’s schedule is at the moment — between reuniting the coven on AHS and establishing Kim Kardashian’s acting career on All’s Fair — we’ll likely be spared from Mr Schue (Morrison) re-entering our lives for a few more years.
