Great British Bake Off contestants feel the heat during custard week

It was custard week on The Great British Bake Off tonight (October 25) - and contestants baked in more ways than one. The episode was filmed during toasty temperatures earlier this year.

Five competitors are now left in the 13th series of the hit show. Only one, however, can be crowned the ultimate winner.

The Channel 4 favourite is renowned for its fun tasks, creativity and eccentric themes which change every week. In each programme, the bakers complete three challenges in line with the theme - a signature, a technical and a showstopper.

Although there might be a chill in the air currently, tonight's custard-themed episode was produced when the weather was much warmer. Viewers saw some of the bakers struggling to keep their creations together in the humid Bake Off tent.

"Is there such thing as too much custard?" co-presenter Noel Fielding enthusiastically asked at the start of the show. Contestant Janusz would probably answer 'yes, definitely' - as he watched in horror as his custard-ice cream combo collapsed.

"Oh no," he said. "My ice cream didn't set - it's like water!"

But Syabira was successful in serving up a delicious custard cake. It won the approval of judge Paul Hollywood, who described the treat as "impressive" and "spectacular".

Custard week saw Kevin become the next baker to be eliminated. Meanwhile, Syabira was crowned tonight's star baker.

Not everyone was happy with the custard theme. On Twitter, @thevintagetrunk commented: "Oh dear, custard! One of my least favourite foods…"

@TizzyBurnell said: "Can we go back to baking? Just like @bbcstrictly should go back to dancing…" But GigiCobb2010 was full of praise, tweeting: "This season has been fabulous!"

Thankfully, there was no repeat of so-called 'Custardgate'. This controversial drama happened on series four of the show when contestant Howard experienced the trauma of having his custard 'stolen'. The 'theft', however, was accidental as fellow competitor Deborah unwittingly used his lovingly created custard in her trifle.

Bake Off is presented by Noel Fielding and Matt Lucas, with judges Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith. It follows the trials and tribulations of the contestants, young and old, from every background and every corner of Britain, as they attempt to prove their baking prowess.

The Great British Bake Off continues on Channel 4 at 8pm on Tuesdays.
