A grassroots activist committed to promoting Black people in the Arts has been named Merseyside Woman of the Year (MWOTY).
Jubeda Khatun, co-founder of BlackFest, was given the award at the Crowne Plaza hotel in Liverpool. BlackFest is a homegrown festival which celebrates Black artists in theatre, music, film, visual arts, spoken word and poetry.
Formed in 2018, the organisation is dedicated to bridging the gap between ethnic minorities and the institutions they represent. Its mission is to break the status quo and aims to “educate, empower and improve equality in the arts”.

Ms Khatun said: "I am so happy to have received this award, it dismantled what a leader looks and sounds like.
“This is a win for Black women, women of colour, women who have visible barriers, our communities and people who are neurodiverse. I want to thank all who nominated me, the organisers and sponsors, and all the incredible finalists and winners.
“I made sure I celebrated all the women and in particular the black and women of colour in the room that day, it was great to see the diversity at MWOTY this year and hopefully more in the coming years."
Last year BlackFest ran from the end of September until the start of October.
