Granit Xhaka at centre of bust-up in fiery Switzerland vs Serbia World Cup clash

Serbia were furious after they weren't awarded a penalty in their World Cup defeat against Switzerland - as Granit Xhaka got himself involved in a late bust-up.

The Arsenal skipper was at the centre of a mass brawl between the two sets of players following a clash with Serbia defender Nikola Milenkovic. Milenkovic was attempting to shield the ball out for a goal-kick when he clashed with Xhaka and shoved the midfielder.

Xhaka did not stand down and the pair squared up with players from both sides getting involved in a melee which gradually made its way back to the middle of the park. Both players were given yellow card for their troubles, with Xhaka needing to be pulled away from the scene by teammates as tensions continued to escalate.

It was not the first flashpoint in the fiery contest which had a place in the World Cup knockout stages riding on it. With the Swiss leading 3-2 and heading into second place in Group H, Aleksandar Mitrovic was brought down inside the box by Fabian Schar in the 65th minute - leading to huge appeals from the Serbia team and bench.

However, referee Fernando Rapallini waved away appeals and decided not to award a penalty. VAR had a brief look at the incident but agreed with the on-pitch official and waved play on. It is safe to say the Serbia squad were far from happy with the decision and a number of their substitutes surrounded the fourth official in frustration, with some encroaching onto the pitch.

Goalkeeper Predrag Rajkovic was shown a yellow card for his protests, while the players on the pitch got into a scuffle over the incident. When play eventually resumed, Serbia pushed in an attempt to grab a late equaliser but they were unable to score another as Switzerland ran out 3-2 winners at Stadium 974.

There was a lot riding on the fixture going into the game with both teams able to qualify. But it was Xherdan Shaqiri who opened the scoring for the Swiss with an emphatic finish, and it looked comfortable for Murat Yakin's men, before Serbia responded. Mitrovic headed home a delightful leveller, before Dusan Vlahovic's strike turned the game on its head to put Serbia in second on a dramatic night in Doha.

Then Breel Embolo levelled for Switzerland just before the break to dampen Serbia's spirits and give Cameroon hope in the other group game as they took on Brazil, who were already qualified thanks to winning their first two group games. But the Swiss would go back in front midway through the second period through Nottingham Forest midfielder Remo Freuler, who calmly slotted the ball home.

In the other match, Vincent Aboubakar scored a dramatic late winner for the Africans to beat Brazil - securing their first World Cup win since 2002 although it didn't matter much in the context of the group. Brazil finished up in top spot, with Switzerland in second, Cameroon in third and Serbia at the bottom of the table.
