Gwyneth's death at the age of 76 was announced by her agent Matthew Lacey, who explained in a statement on behalf of the family that she died “after complications following a major operation for a perforated colon.”
The statement added: “She passed away peacefully, with her husband (Alan Leith) and niece at her bedside.”
Gwyneth played Bridget McClusky on Grange Hill for 10 years, from 1981 to 1991, with her famous character being succeeded by Mr Robson, the teacher slightly younger viewers will remember as being head.
The statement from her agent continued: "“Gwyneth will be greatly missed by her adoring family and friends along with her many fans from multiple TV appearances.”
