An actress who became known to millions as the headteacher in Grange Hill has died at the age of 76. Gwyneth Powell passed away from complictions following major surgery.
She was best known for her role in the popular children's TV show where she played headteacher Bridget McClusky. The news was confirmed in a statement from her agent Matthew Lacey on behalf of her family.
He said that she died last Thursday in Brighton after suffering "complications following a major operation for a perforated colon."
the statement added: "She passed away peacefully, with her husband (Alan Leith) and niece at her bedside. Gwyneth will be greatly missed by her adoring family and friends along with her many fans from multiple TV appearances."
Patricia Hidalgo, director of BBC Children's and Education: "We are very sorry to hear of the passing of Gwyneth Powell. Her famous portrayal of Mrs McClusky is one that will be fondly remembered by all those that grew up watching Grange Hill. Our thoughts are with her family and friends at this sad time."
The actress was born in Manchester in 1946 and her first major TV role was in 1971 when she appeared in The Guardians. She went on to appear in a number of other programmes however it was not until she took on the role of Mrs McClusky in the children's show that she became a household name.
She appeared in the show for 10 years. She has played roles in a number of big-name shows including Heartbeat, Holby City, Father Brown and Man Down.
