A woman has told of the moment she was heroically rescued after being swept 12 miles down the river for over four hours.
' Grandma Ree', 81, has lived to tell the tale after falling into a murky dangerous river in Thailand, and being dragged downstream.
The 81-year-old tumbled into the Chao Phraya River in Thailand at around 3am on 6 September, and was quickly dragged down and around by the strong currents.
Luckily, a fish farmer spotted the helpless woman, who comes from the town of Ban Pom in the Thai province of Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya, at around 7am - a shocking four hours after she originally fell into the river.
Some 20 kilometres from her home - in a completely different district - the woman was found wearing a wraparound skirt known as a ‘pha thung’ and was grabbing onto a blanket.
And in order to stop her from being pulled down by the strong waters, the pensioner was found bobbing onto a floating fish cage known as a ‘krachang pla’.
Holding onto the cage for dear life, the head of the Ban Pom administration organisation, Apichart Suksomboon, said the fish farmer safely pulled the elderly woman to dry land, after finding her in the area of Bang Padaeng in the district of Bang Pa-in.
The grandma underwent medical checks before being taken home, reportedly in good health.
Speaking about how lucky the woman was to escape unscathed, Apichart said that the currents at that time of the night were very strong.
He added that it was “incredible” she survived the terrifying ordeal.
While it remains unclear as to how the grandma fell into the water, she decided to swim in the river just after leaving her daughter's house, according to one report.
Additionally, her family said they were really relieved to hear that she was unhurt following the incident.
Provincial deputy governor Nutchanart Pratheeptheeranan scheduled in to visit the elderly woman at her home yesterday.
