Grandad dies walking home from pub in freezing weather a week before Christmas

A man has died after walking home from a pub in freezing weather a week before Christmas. The body of missing man, Jamie Scott, was found in farmland after he disappeared following a night out.

The 53-year-old was last seen over the weekend after he went out for a drink in Hull on December 17. Hull Live reports that he was seen twice on his walk home from a pub.

Jamie's family posted on social media that at around 8pm on Saturday evening, the grandad was helped by a lady but "insisted on walking home to Kingswood from Hull Road, Beverley". His family thinks he then headed towards the Jet Garage after 20 to 30 minutes.

At 8.40pm, he was then spotted again on Grovehill Road in Beverley. The total length of the journey to get home would have been over five miles in conditions of around -1C to -2C.

Jamie never returned home and did not arrive to pick up his beloved dog Jasper - which was very out of character. Following this unusual behaviour, the family launched an appeal on social media the next day.

Humberside Police also first issued an appeal to find Jamie on Sunday, but by Monday afternoon, it was reported that there was a sad outcome. Tragically, police announced they had found a body on farmland between Weel and Hull, which they believed to be Jamie.

Heartbreakingly, the police believe that Jamie "sadly succumbed to the weather conditions over the weekend". Superintendent Rhod Troake said: "This is a tragic incident, and for his family and friends this is an outcome that no one wanted to see.

"Jamie was reported missing after he had not been seen since he had left a public house in Beverley on Saturday December 17. It is thought that he had tried to make his way home and sadly succumbed to the weather conditions over the weekend.

"Although formal identification has yet to take place, Jamie’s family have been informed and are being supported by officers. Our thoughts remain with them and his friends at this extremely difficult time. Our initial enquiries have been carried out and his death is not being treated as suspicious."

Jamie's family members then announced the horrible news to the thousands who had helped share the search on social media. The statement read: "Thank you all so much for sharing my recent post regarding Jamie Scott. The post reached THOUSANDS of people and we are so grateful for the power of Facebook as it gave the family a starting point to our search and rough time frame.

"Thank you from the bottom of our hearts, from my mother-in-law who has lost her brother and not on any social media she is blown away with how fast news spreads and the generosity from people willing to help who don’t even know us. Again thank you."

After the sad news arrived on Monday afternoon, hundreds of messages of support and tributes flooded in. Jamie was described as a "fantastic grandad", friend and dog lover.

One local said said: "Lovely man, was a pleasure to meet him when walking the dogs, he always had treats for them all. Sincere condolences to his family and friends."

Another added: "So sorry for your loss. We saw Jamie and Jasper all the time on the river bank. Jamie would feed my dog treats. Such a friendly man. Condolences to you all."

A relative paid tribute, stating: "Please send my condolences to the rest of the family. We are heartbroken, he was such a great man and a fantastic grandad to my kids. Sending my love to you all."
