I Am Maximus has won the Grand National to emulate the legendary Red Rum at Aintree.
The 9/2 favourite, trained by Willie Mullins and ridden by Paul Townend, reclaimed the crown he took in 2024, having been runner-up to 33/1 shot Nick Rockett last year, and is the first horse since Red Rum in the 1970s to regain the Grand National title having lost it.
Jordans, a 28/1 outsider under Ben Jones, had the lead following the final hurdle, but I Am Maximus reeled in his advantage while loose horses also ran towards the line. Iroko (18/1) was second with Jordans third and Johnnywho (12/1) fourth.
There has been sad news already at Aintree this week however, with Gold Dancer being put down moments after breaking his back while winning the Mildmay Novices’ Chase on Friday and Get On George similarly being “humanely euthanised” after pulling up in the William Hill Handicap Hurdle this afternoon.

I Am Maximus makes racing history with victory in chaotic 2026 Grand National
17:10 , Luke BakerI Am Maximus etched his name in Grand National folklore after winning the famous race for a second time, adding 2026 to his 2024 triumph.
A chaotic race was disrupted by loose horses all over the Aintree course, but Paul Townend has been here before and he masterfully steered I Am Maximus through the traffic to victory, pegging back Jordans, ridden by Ben Jones, in the final furlong.
History was written in myriad ways. I Am Maximus is the first horse to regain the title since Red Rum, having come up short to stablemate Nick Rockett last year. Willie Mullins becomes the first trainer to record three successive Grand National winners since the great Vincent O’Brien in the 1950s. JP McManus becomes the first owner to have four winners, and Mullins gave McManus plenty of credit.
Read Lawrence Ostlere’s full report of the race:

Grand National medical updates issued on three horses who failed to finish the race
18:10 , Luke BakerThree horses are reportedly undergoing veterinary assessment after failing to complete the Grand National, while one jockey has been taken to hospital for further treatment.
The incidents occurred during the challenging four-and-a-quarter-mile race on Saturday afternoon, which also saw an earlier equine fatality on the day.
Willie Mullins’s Quai De Bourbon fell at the second fence, and Sara Bradstock’s Mr Vango came down at the sixth obstacle. Both horses were transported back to the stables in a horse ambulance for evaluation.
Top Of The Bill, trained by Nigel and Willy Twiston-Davies and ridden by Toby McCain-Mitchell, fell at the final fence. Although he remained on the ground for a brief period, he was later seen walking back to the stables.

Positive update on Top Of The Bill
16:43 , Luke BakerA positive update from presenter Ed Chamberlin on ITV on Top Of The Bill.
He was one of the fallers and was being assessed on the course by the veterinary team, which is often a bad sign, but the horse is now up and walking back to the stables. That’s very good news.
The jockey in the worst shape was Robert Dunne on Stellar Story. The update on Dunne is that he’s conscious and talking and will be taken to hospital for further assessment.
Willie Mullins: 'Maybe the Grand National is changing'
16:37 , Luke BakerWillie Mullins has also talked to ITV after becoming the first trainer since Vincent O'Brien between 1963 and 1965 to win the Grand National three years in a row.
I Am Maximus is also the first top weight horse to win this race since Red Rum back in 1974 and Mullins believes the race might be changing.
“The most trouble came from its own stable,” said Mullins. “Paul [jockey Paul Townend] executed it so good. It is [very hard to win off top weight]. But it is changing, maybe we need to look at it. It’s very tough.
“It’s the one we aspire to win when we go into racing. The one you want to win, just to have a runner in it.”
Paul Townend salutes I Am Maximus
16:33 , Luke BakerJockey Paul Townend spoke to ITV after that remarkable victory on I Am Maximus.
“He’s tough isn’t he! He’s so good, he’s got such an engine. He gallops to the end of the world for you,” said Townend.
“It’s a privilege to do it. What a horse.
“This win is right up there. It's Grand Nationals and Gold Cups, they're the pinnacle of our sport. I’ve got them both!”

Top Of The Bill being assessed on course
16:26 , Luke BakerNow for the darker side of the Grand National. We await news of the horses and jockeys who either fell or were pulled up during the race.
The most concern seems to be for Top Of The Bill, with presenter Ed Chamberlin announcing on ITV that he is being assessed on the course. We’ll await further updates but that’s often a phrase that precedes a horse being put down.
Meanwhile, Quai De Bourbon has walked on to a horse ambulance and been taken to the stables for further assessment.

I Am Maximus matches Red Rum
16:23 , Luke BakerNot only is I Am Maximus the first horse since Red Rum to regain the Grand National crown having lost it but he matches the racing legend in another.
He is the first top weight horse to win the Grand National since Red Rum back in 1974.
It is also a third consecutive Grand National winner for trainer Willie Mullins, the first trainer since Vincent O'Brien between 1963 and 1965 to win this race three years in a row.
And finally, JP McManus becomes the first owner in Grand National history to record four winners.

Get On George becomes second horse to die at 2026 Aintree Festival
15:36 , Luke BakerA second horse has died at Aintree Festival after Get on George was “humanely euthanised” following the second race on Saturday, the William Hill Handicap Hurdle.
Gold Dancer died after winning the Mildmay Novices’ Chase on Friday.
Get On George pulled up during its race and was treated on the track before being put down.
ITV presenter Ed Chamberlin announced the news on the live broadcast, saying: “Aintree say he was assessed on course by their expert veterinary team and it was decided the best course of action for the horse’s welfare was for him to be put down. It's described as humanly euthanised.”

Ed Chamberlin and Oli Bell's Grand National tips
15:31 , Luke BakerPresenters Ed Chamberlin and Oli Bell have given their Grand National tips courtesy of Sky Bet.
Here’s what the duo had to say.
Ed Chamberlin: “Grangeclare West has a big chance in the big one – that’s my win bet. I fancy both of Henry de Bromhead’s as an each way bet – Gorgeous Tom with Sean Flanagan, and Montys Star has a big each way chance.”
Oli Bell: “I’m siding with Jagwar in this year’s race – I thought the running at Cheltenham was excellent and the National test will really suit him. I think Champ Kiely will run really well too. Keep an eye on Percival Legallois – he went off 10/1 in last year’s race and he’s much bigger this time around, and I think he’s a big player.”

More success for the Skeltons ahead of Panic Attack going in the National
14:55 , Luke BakerIs it all gearing up for Panic Attack to win the Grand National today? The Skeltons have yet another winner today as Mr Hope Street takes the William Hill Handicap Chase, just pipping his rivals late on.
Panic Attack is co-favourite in the main event today and the vibes seem to be good for the Skeltons.
“He’s won like a fresh horse,” said jockey Harry Skelton of Mr Hope Street. “It’s a brilliant bit of training. He has had niggly issues throughout the year so we couldn't get many runs into him.”

Public opinion split on horse racing as Polanski calls for ban ahead of Grand National
14:25 , Luke BakerPublic opinion is split over the future of horse racing a pollster has said, after Green Party leader Zack Polanski called for a ban.
The row has intensified on the day of horse racing’s biggest race, the Grand National, after Gold Dancer and Get On George have both died in the last 24 hours at the Aintree Festival, sparking backlash.
According to YouGov, 38 per cent of those asked about the future of horse racing in its most recent survey supported its ban, the exact same number who support it continuing, with a further 24 per cent undecided.
In a social media post, they noted: “With Zack Polanski calling for a ban on horse racing, our 2023 survey found Britons split over such a ban.”

Get On George put down at Aintree
13:49 , Luke BakerSome sad news out of that second race, the William Hill Handicap Hurdle, as Get On George has been put down.
Get On George was pulled up towards the back of the race and quickly dismounted by Jack Tudor.
He was assessed by on-course veterinary staff and they determined that the six-year-old, who was trained by Joel Parkinson and sue Smith, has had to be “humanely euthanised.”
It is the second horse death of the week at Aintree after Gold Dancer was put down after breaking his back while winning the Mildmay Novices’ Chase on Friday.

One grey horse in the Grand National
13:14 , Luke BakerA lot of people love backing a grey horse in the National and there is one, but only one, in the field this year.
The horse in question is Marble Sands, trained by David Killahena and Graeme McPherson and will be wearing No 30 today.
The nine-year-old came home second in his most recent race at Wetherby on Boxing Day but had won at Cheltenham in his previous race.
He was due to be ridden by Kielan Woods but he picked up an injury earlier this week, so Tom Bellamy will have the ride.

Mirabad wins the Hallgarten & Novum Wines Maghull Novices' Chase
12:58 , Luke BakerSalvator Mundi was a heavy favourite in the eight-horse opening race but 50-1 upset Mirabad has caused a huge upset!
It’s a first Grade 1 victory for jockey Tristan Durrell, as trainer Dan Skelton adds to his Aintree tally with Salvator Mundi coming home second. The favourite lead for a lot of the race but Mirabad finished so strongly.
Can Skelton repeat that victory in the National with the heavily-backed Panic Attack?

Movement in the betting markets as others join I Am Maximus
12:23 , Luke BakerI Am Maximus has been the standout favourite all week but the markets are starting to move and suddenly, Willie Mullins’ charge isn’t out front on his own.
The 2024 winner is still trading at around 8/1 but you can get 9/1 in some places now. Meanwhile, Panic Attack – with Harry Skelton aboard and Dan Skelton training – has come right in to 8/1 and is slightly shorter in a lot of places.
Jagwar, who will be ridden by Mark Walsh, is also priced around 8/1, so we now have three co-favourites! Grangeclare West, another Mullins horse, is not far behind at 9/1 generally.

Aintree horse Gold Dancer suffers fatal injury while winning race
12:02 , Luke BakerThe racehorse Gold Dancer has been put down after breaking his back while winning the Mildmay Novices' Chase at Aintree on Friday.
Gold Dancer had managed to stay on its feet following an awkward landing on the final fence, with the 100-30 joint-favourite under Paul Townend crossing the line ahead of Regent's Stroll by four and three-quarter lengths.
It was immediately clear, however, that Gold Dancer had suffered a serious injury when the horse made a mistake going over the final hurdle and its back legs dragged along the ground.
The seven-year-old, trained by Willie Mullins, received on-course treatment by the Aintree veterinary team and screens were erected around him after crossing the line. But it was then confirmed that Gold Dancer had been put down.
