Three years ago around 6,000 people came together for the Grand Iftar on St Mark’s road. The Islamic community event that began in 2017 as a response to the Manchester arena bombing, was organised by a group of volunteers from different sections of the Muslim community in Bristol.
Hanna Ahmed, who sadly passed away at the end of 2020, was one of the key organisers of the event and this year will be the first time the St Marks Road Grand Iftar will be celebrated in her absence. The smaller event taking place this evening will be a tribute to Hanna and a way of remembering her contribution not only to the Grand Iftar but to the wider community.
Hannah was born in Dubai to Somali parents who returned to Somalia when she was just 10. Along with her mother and siblings she arrived in the UK at age 14 and lived in London for four years before moving to Bristol at the age of 18 after getting married.
