Grand Designs 'saddest ever house' sees huge twist as property now on sale as two separate homes

A West Country £10million property that has become one of the most infamous to ever appear on Grand Designs is on the market selling as two homes.

The huge project to build and sell Chesil Cliff House, in Croyde, Devon took a toll on Edward and Hazel Short and the couple ended up divorcing. Edward and Hazel's project was deemed the "saddest ever" by viewers as the huge challenge of the renovation was featured on the Channel 4 programme.

The building work nearly destroyed owner Edward - and cost him his marriage in an episode of Grand Designs which many said was the saddest ever. The property was valued at a staggering £10million has been on the market since July last year, reports Devon Live.

According to the Daily Mail, the home - which was close to being purchased before a mystery buyer pulled out - has been put back on the market with a new plan to shift the development.

The main house is set to be marketed at £7.5 million while the second adjacent beach development called 'The Eye' is on offer for £2.5 million. A source close to the sale of the property told MailOnline: "The sale of Chesil Cliff House in its entirety is very much on. It has only been put back on the market, because certain deadlines for the sale have passed.

"Ed is still confident that the original interest, which is from a foreign buyer, will see his property sold. He remains positive about it all.

"The sale is being negotiated, but because the potential buyer hasn't yet signed on the dotted line and an agreed date has passed, the agents have been obliged to offer it to all interested parties again. The preferred sale would see it sold as a single property, but Ed is keen to see if maybe one of the developments can be sold first in a separate deal to get one off his hands."

"He is his usual optimistic self and remains confident it won't be that long before a deal is done and the secret bidder will eventually reach a deal with him."

The estate agents marketing the build took the property off the market in July, with terms of sale to be discussed. The deal later fell through.

The £10 million price tag for both combined remains but in a new plan to attract buyers they offer the properties separately with Chesil Cliff on for £7.5 million and The Eye, £2.5 million.

Nic Chbat from Match Property.co.uk, who is also marketing the build, previously said: "This is the most expensive property in the area full stop and it will be for a long time to come. The nearest property to it is worth £5 million. It's double because of the location - it's such an amazing location and obviously what Edward has built, it's phenomenal and it's notorious now.

"It's the design, the position, that panoramic view. That's the uniqueness and also when you're travelling here you go through Croyde and you think 'I'm not here yet'. 'Where is it? Where is it?'

"And you come right to the end and finally there it is sitting there like a little landmark of a jewel overlooking the whole of the coast. You've got Lundy Island in the background and on a day like this, when you have all the colours and the light, it's like the South of France.

"People say it's like the French Riviera because a lot of people don't know North Devon. They know Cornwall, Rock, Padstow because it has all been hyped. But this area, although it's well known, it's under the radar but people know it now because of the house."
