Grand Designs fans in tears over couple's house in 'most emotional episode ever'

The latest episode of Grand Designs featured a 'relatable' couple whose touching story unleashed tears on Wednesday night.

The home of Rob, 58 and Kate, 47, in Kent was dubbed as the fastest build ever seen on the Channel 4 programme. Fans were moved by the flatpack house that replaced the home originally built by Rob's grandfather in 1948.

In an emotional moment, Rob, a former farmer, said he was dedicated to building the house to make his wife smile. The couple shared how they weren't able to have children, but said the build would help make their family complete.

He explained: "I've always wanted to build Kate a house - to see a smile on her face and how excited she gets, she's wonderful."

"His connection to things can be infectious," said Kate. "If it's important to him, it's important to me. I've not been able to have children, so being able to create this which is so much of us together, is different, but it's home."

The speedy five-month project was due to the creative couple commissioning a factory-built home to replace the old family home that was ridden with asbestos and lacked insulation.

Rob and Kate's £350,000 budget paid for six modules pre-fitted with kitchen cupboards and light switches. The flatpack home was delivered on the back of a lorry and transformed into a two-storey three bedroom, two bathroom house.

The family connection and the couple's loving statements brought many a Grand Designs fan to tears. Viewers took to social media to declare their admiration.

One person gushed: "Genuinely the nicest, most wholesome episode of #GrandDesigns in about 15 years. A normal, cheerful couple with a reasonable and plausible budget! A competent, trustworthy and innovative set of builders! No insane delays! No divorce! No seven years of living in a caravan! Amazing"

"We are less than 5 mins in and I'm desperate to give them a cuddle," wrote one charmed viewer.

Many fans appreciated the divergence from the disaster builds that have become infamous on the programme. In comparison, the premiere episode for the latest series of Grand Designs last week saw a couple go £1million over budget.

A fan marvelled: "I just can't believe how relatable this weeks couple on #GrandDesigns is. They're normal people! It's so refreshing"

"This is genuinely lovely," another person tweeted. "What a change from the 'more money than sense' shambles we normally get #GrandDesigns"
