Grand Daddy I.U. dead - Rapper 'dies in his sleep' at 54 as LL Cool J pays tribute

Grand Daddy I.U. has died at the age of 54, it's been reported.

The prominent member of early rap label Cold Chillin' Records is believed to have passed away in his sleep, according to reports from American publications.

His business manager also took to social media earlier this evening to seemingly confirm the sad news, writing how they are praying for a "a peaceful and easy transition."

Although his death has not yet been confirmed, LL Cool J took to social media to pay tribute to the late star - sharing an image of his friend alongside a moving caption.

"Rest in power King. HipHop was in your DNA. @granddaddy_iu Thank You for your contribution," the rapper wrote to his Instagram followers earlier today [December 13].

Busta Rhymes was one of the many to comment on the update from LL Cool J, writing: "Waking up to this crazy. RIP ALMIGHTY GDIU!!"

According to TMZ: "Legendary hip hop producer Pete Rock, a longtime advocate for GDIU's skills as a lyricist, revealed to his followers the Queens-born rapper died peacefully in his sleep."

The late rapper, real name Ayub Bey, was born in Queens, New York was active during the golden age of hip-hop and released a number of successful singles throughout his career.

His 1990 debut album, Smooth Assassin, gave the late star two Billboard Rap Chart hits: "Something New" (#11) which sampled James & Bobby Purify's only hit—their signature tune "I'm Your Puppet", and "Sugar Free" (#9).

The rapper was also known for his ghostwriting and production work and collaborated with the likes of for Das EFX, Heltah Skeltah, KRS-One and Ice-T among others.

As the news broke, Grand Daddy I.U's business manager took to Instagram to write: "No I am not okay. I'm devastated.

"Anyone who really knows me knows how much pure love and respect I had for him and his family. I'm staying quiet right now. I do not need to post pictures nor stories to profess anything.

"I pray for a peaceful and easy transition."

The late star's friend DJ Chuck Chillout also paid tribute online, writing: "Man this one hurts RIP to coldchillin artist MC @granddaddy_iu rest well bro u will be miss."
