The Recording Academy has announced a significant overhaul of its rules for the 2027 Grammy Awards, introducing five new categories and adjusting eligibility criteria to better reflect the contemporary music landscape.
These additions include a Best Asian Pop Music Performance, designed to celebrate the diverse sounds of K-pop, J-pop, and C-pop, with the award going to the performer.
A new Best Traditional Pop Vocal Performance category will honor artists whose work "cannot properly be intermingled with present forms of pop music."
Songwriters will also gain recognition with a Best Latin Song category, specifically for tracks predominantly recorded in Spanish.
The R&B field sees a new Best R&B Collaboration or Duo/Group Performance award, complementing a reimagined Best R&B Solo Performance.
Folk music categories are also being refined, with Best Folk Album evolving into Best Contemporary Folk Album and the introduction of a Best Traditional Folk Album.
Perhaps the most notable shift affects the coveted Best New Artist award.
Artists will now be permitted to submit for consideration up to four times, an increase from the previous three.
This adjustment aims to acknowledge the extended time it often takes for artists to achieve widespread recognition in today's music market.
While there's no strict limit on prior releases, a screening committee will assess "whether the artist had attained this high degree of impact in the music industry prior to the eligibility year."
Crucially, any artist who has previously received a Grammy nomination remains ineligible.
Additionally, certain qualified members will now have expanded voting privileges across more categories. Harvey Mason jr., CEO of the Recording Academy, expressed optimism about the changes, stating, "2027 is going to be an amazing year for the Grammy Awards, and one that reflects the extraordinary growth we’re seeing across music. The changes advanced by our Recording Academy members speak to the breadth of today’s music industry and the many genres, crafts and creators shaping it. We’re excited to see these updates come to life in the year ahead as we celebrate the music people who are driving music forward."
These comprehensive updates underscore the Academy's ongoing efforts to adapt its prestigious awards to the dynamic and evolving global music industry.
