Graham Potter has already given Todd Boehly seal of approval for heavy Chelsea spending

No team in Europe spent more money on players in this summer's transfer window than Chelsea. Todd Boehly's ambition to win trophies was highlighted with the Blues spending around £273 million (including add-ons) this summer.

Wesley Fofana became the third most expensive defender of all time after arriving at Stamford Bridge for a fee in the region of £70 million, while over £60 million was spent on Marc Cucurella, and Raheem Sterling set the Blues back £47.5 million. Significant fees were also spent on Kalidou Koulibaly, Carney Chukwuemeka and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

In total, a record-breaking figure of £1.9 billion was spent by Premier League clubs this summer, with no side contributing more to that total than the Blues. The Premier League outspent the Bundesliga, Serie A and La Liga combined.

The previous record was set in the summer of 2017, when clubs spent a combined total of £1.4 billion, so the record was smashed this season by around £500 million. New Blues boss Graham Potter only spent around £40 million at Brighton this summer - a huge contrast to what Boehly shelled out to strengthen Chelsea's squad - and has labelled the Premier League's spending record being broken as 'insane'.

"When I hear that figure, there are two things that automatically pop in: A, it's an obscene amount of money in the real world," said Potter. "And, B, there's a lot of money coming in in tax revenue at a time when it sounds like we need every bit we can get.

"That money is coming in and if it is being spent then presumably that money is going into the exchequer somewhere. That's a positive. But clearly, the number is insane."
