Graham Potter refused to be drawn on Chelsea’s January transfer business.

Standard Sport understands the club are edging closer to the £112m signing of Argentina World Cup star Enzo Fernandez following overnight talks with Benfica, while they remain interested in Arsenal target Mykhaylo Mudryk.

The club are also closing in on a £35m deal to sign Monaco defender Benoit Badiashile, after already having completed the signings of Molde striker David Datro Fofana and Vasco da Gama midfielder Andrey Santos.

England star Jude Bellingham, meanwhile, has been identified as a target ahead of the summer transfer window.

Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital are continuing to back Potter despite a dismal run of form of late, with New Year’s Day’s draw at Nottingham Forest leaving his team seven points behind the top four.

The former Brighton boss insisted he was having to dodge questions about potential arrivals and merely focus on getting the most out of his team.

“It’s a good question but the problem is if I answer it and I’m specific in that answer, every single player in that area will be linked with Chelsea," he said.

"So I have to dodge it - and I hope you can understand why I’m dodging it. I always answer that part of the question by saying that I’m the head coach and my responsibility is to the players that are here.

"We will try in every window to improve, but January is a complicated one because it’s the middle of the season.

"And in the meantime, we have to deal with all the noise of Chelsea getting linked with everybody and I don’t comment on any player that isn’t a Chelsea player.

"As always, and it’s a boring answer, but my job is to help the players that are here and support the club in terms of decisions they make in terms of how to improve."
