Graham Norton Show: Benedict Cumberbatch reveals he had to rescue family from herd of cows in 'un-Sherlock' move

Sherlock star Benedict Cumberbatch is set to appear on The Graham Norton Show tonight alongside Diane Morgan, Daisy Edgar-Jones, Olly Alexander and RuPaul, to discuss his experience of filming The Power of the Dog. The Western psychological drama was released in UK cinemas in November, and has landed Cumberbatch an Oscar nomination for his role as ranch owner Phil Burbank.

During the show, which was recorded yesterday but will air this evening (Friday, February 25), Benedict revealed that he helped rescue a family from a herd of cows during filming for the movie, according to the Daily Mail. The 45-year-old actor told Graham Norton that he was able to 'part the waves' of the herd of cows after returning from shooting for the film last August.

Benedict also divulged to the host and other guests that he spent two months living on a ranch to get into character as director Jane Campion encouraged him to stay in role during filming breaks. Speaking to Graham, Benedict said: "Jane encouraged me to stay in character.

"She was very secure about all the things I was insecure about and said, 'Do whatever you have to do to feel ownership of this very different lived experience.'

"So, I went off to Montana for two months to find out what it is like to live on a ranch and to experience all those things you see in the film. It was incredible and so far from anything I have ever done."

The Doctor Strange actor said that he had the opportunity to put his newfound cattle ranching skills to use when he discovered a family trapped in a field, with cows closing in on them. He explained: "I came back from shooting the film in August and we were off to the beach. To get there we had to cross a field and in the field was a petrified family who just couldn't move, they were frozen because of a herd of cows with calves.

"I thought, 'I can do this,' and I just sort of parted the waves of cattle. The family was like, 'That was incredible. Hey, aren't you Sherlock?' It was very un-Sherlock activity!"

The Power of the Dog has collected a staggering eleven Oscar nominations ahead of next month's ceremony. Benedict, who has received a nomination himself for 'Best Actor', has said it 'is going to be great no matter what happens'.

He said: "Whatever happens on the night the whole raft of those nominations are so richly deserved and obviously I am thrilled that the four of us as a cast are nominated.

'We are going to be awesome on that dancefloor - it’s going to be great no matter what happens."

Benedicts' nomination for The Power of the Dog marks his second Oscar nomination, having been nominated for his 2014 role in The Imitation Game. He lost to Eddie Redmayne, who won for his role as Stephen Hawking in The Theory of Everything.
