How did Graham Norton get famous?
Graham Norton got his big break on television when in 1992 his stand-up comedy drag act as Mother Teresa of Calcutta for the Edinburgh Festival Fringe event made the press. The story on his show was picked up after a Scottish Television’s religious affairs department, contacted him and thought he represented the real Mother Teresa.
This fame offered him the opportunity to join the BBC Radio 4 show Loose Ends in the early 1990s as a regular comedian and panellist. The 59-year-old attended the University College Cork where he studied English and French but he did not make it to the end of his studies due to a major breakdown.
He later changed subject and moved to London to attend Central School of Speech and Drama to pursue acting. Norton has said he was robbed and stabbed during this time and had to stay in hospital for two and a half weeks. This near-death experience reminded him to take life more seriously.
The 1990s treated Norton much better, after joining Loose Ends, he went on to appear in a number of shows including Bring Me the Head of Light Entertainment, Carnal Knowledge and The Jack Docherty Show. These shows enabled him to establish a spot in the television industry.
But it was the 2000s he earned the career every presenter and comedian desires. He presented a series of talk shows on television including V Graham Norton on Channel 4, The Graham Norton Effect on Comedy Central, and Any Dream Will Do before signing for his famous chat show The Graham Norton Show on BBC Two in 2007.
If that wasn’t enough, he ended the decade on the ultimate high, replacing Terry Wogan as the UK presenter for the Eurovision Song Contest.

Norton is currently not seeing anyone. He was last publicly dating Andrew Smith, a music marketing consultant in 2015 and prior to that he was in a two-year relationship with Trevor Patterson, a fashion consultant.
