Graeme Souness states where 'sensational' Liverpool lead Arsenal, Chelsea, Man Utd and Tottenham

Graeme Souness has waxed lyrical about Liverpool's recruitment strategy, claiming that they've built a squad worthy of competing on all fronts primarily because of that reason.

After winning the Carabao Cup in February, the Reds are on course to challenge for an unprecedented quadruple this season. They beat Manchester City in the FA Cup semi-final at the weekend, booking a place in the final against Chelsea in May. Meanwhile, they've qualified for the semi-final of the Champions League and also have a strong chance of winning the Premier League should City drop points in the coming weeks.

Whilst Jurgen Klopp's arrival heralded a huge improvement in the club's fortunes on the pitch, their recruitment has also been arguably second to none during the German's time in charge. They've now built one of the most formidable squads in decades, and along with City, they could go onto dominate English football for some time.

"Liverpool are in such a healthy position right now, they have a really strong squad, and they’re adding to it," Souness said whilst speaking on Sky Sports before the Reds' clash with Manchester United on Tuesday night. "(Diogo) Jota last year, (Luis) Diaz this year, and the whole squad gets a lift. Liverpool’s recruitment this time round, well I say this time round, in the last seven or eight years, has been off the charts. They have had an incredible amount of luck with their signings because not everybody gets them all right, but their recruitment has been sensational."

Whilst his words are there to compliment Liverpool, they should also remind their competitors about what they need to do to catch-up to them and City in the coming years. It takes time to mould a team in the way they have, and the right transfer decisions - at the right time - have to be made in order to do so.

Arsenal, Manchester United, Tottenham and even Chelsea - to an extent at least - have all been guilty of paying an extortionate amount of money for players in recent years, but with the exception of the Blues, they're no closer to competing against the top two in England as things stand. But with a better approach to the transfer market, that could change in the coming seasons.
