Graeme Souness reckons Steven Gerrard will have to drop down to the English Championship if he wants to return to the dug-out as the Scotland legend can’t see “any big clubs in the Premier League being interested’ in his fellow former Rangers boss.
Gerrard was axed by Aston Villa last week just short of a year since he left Ibrox for his second managerial role at the Midlands side. Souness described it as an “almighty blow” to the 42-year-old whose pride will have taken a huge dent following an illustrious playing career.
The former Liverpool and England captain failed to win any silverware in his first two seasons at Rangers but made it third time lucky when he led the Ibrox club their first title in a decade. And Souness told talkSPORT he’ll have to show the fighting qualities of his playing days following his sacking.
And he said: “He’ll have to drop down the league. Championship clubs would still want him. You go down there, do a good job and get them up and get a bigger one. I don’t see any big clubs in the Premier League being interested in Steven.
“It’s an almighty blow to Steven. This is the first time in his career he’s had negativity. Steven Gerrard has shown a steely determination throughout his playing career and he’ll show that again this time.
“Whether he comes back or not… I would imagine financially it’s not a necessity but his pride will be sorely dented. There’s no disgrace in getting the sack. There’s no disgrace in not being successful at a football club as a manager. It can just be circumstances, a bit of bad luck, injuries to key players or whatever it may be. And go again, if it’s in him. It might not be in him.”
