Graeme Shinnie nears Aberdeen transfer return as Pittodrie favourite set to be cut at Wigan by Kolo Toure

Aberdeen are closing in on a return for Graeme Shinnie with the Dons looking to seal a deal to re-sign the popular midfielder from Wigan Athletic.

Jim Goodwin is keen to land the former Aberdeen captain and bring him back to Pittodrie for a second stint, having enjoyed a successful spell under former boss Derek McInnes after his arrival from Inverness Caledonian Thistle. He led the Dons into Europe in his three consecutive seasons in the Granite City. The Scotland international had four years with his hometown club before he left Aberdeen on freedom of contract to join Derby County in 2019.

Shinnie had two successful seasons in the English Championship with the Rams before their financial problems and he moved to Wigan last season. The Latics have just appointed Kolo Toure as their new boss and he is looking to freshen up his squad and to free up budget by moving others on. Shinnie appears to be surplus to requirements as Toure plans for the relegation scrap.
