As we went back in and went over the Pittsburgh Steelers first five games, it took some digging at times to get to the good through the bad and just plain weird. We started off our grades by going with offense and it was because we wanted you to have the bad news first. Things aren’t great on defense but there are some real bright spots through five games.
Defensive line - C
This group is struggling from the loss of Cam Heyward which really hurts the overall grade. But thankfully, the play of Larry Ogunjobi and Keeanu Benton give this group a little bump.
Outside linebacker - A
The combination of T.J. Watt and Alex Highsmith has been as good as advertised. Watt leads the league and eight sacks and Highsmith is the perfect pairing.
Inside linebacker - B-
Finally, by the fifth game, this brand new trio started to look like the group we all expected. Cole Holcomb, Kwon Alexander and Elandon Roberts seem to be coming together, mastering the defense and starting to make plays.
Cornerback - D
With all due respect to rookie Joey Porter Jr. who should have an expanded role the rest of the season, this group has underperformed big time. Patrick Peterson and Levi Wallace really struggle when the pass rush isn’t on point and the rest of the group has been mediocre.
Safety - C-
Despite the lack of splash plays, Minkah Fitzpatrick remains selfless in how he plays. But he is getting no help from Keanu Neal and Damontae Kazee and that pushes this grade down.
