Grading the Ravens’ re-signing of FB Patrick Ricard

The Baltimore Ravens have been active over the first week of 2022 free agency. They’ve brought in multiple outside free agents including safety Marcus Williams, offensive tackle Morgan Moses and defensive lineman Michael Pierce. However they also have now re-signed one of their own free agents in fullback Patrick Ricard.

Ricard returns to Baltimore on a three-year deal that’s been reported to be just under $4 million per season. That number would make him the second highest-paid fullback in the NFL, only behind former Raven and current San Fransisco 49ers Pro Bowler Kyle Juszczyk.

For Baltimore, the fullback is an important aspect of the offense they run under offensive coordinator Greg Roman. While the position has become less and less popular as time has gone on, the Ravens still see value in it, and Ricard is one of the best at what he does. He is extremely versatile, and can line up in multiple different spots on the field.

While fullbacks aren’t deemed as flashy, Baltimore has put Ricard in situations to flash his skills and be successful. He paves the way in the running game and can even catch passes out of the backfield, putting up 29 receptions for 167 yards and five touchdowns during his career.

Ricard’s return should end up being a good thing for the Ravens’ offense as a whole. His re-signing doesn’t necessarily move any needles for Baltimore, but it also doesn’t prevent them from making other moves. Ricard will likely make many big plays for the Baltimore over the his new contract.

Grade: B-
