The Indianapolis Colts traded their second-round pick to the Minnesota Vikings while adding an extra pick in the third round of the 2022 NFL draft.
This now gives the Colts three selections on Day 2 of the draft. While there were some intriguing prospects on the board like wide receiver Skyy Moore, the Colts got very strong value in terms of draft picks.
Here are the terms of the deal laid out:
Colts receive: No. 53 overall, No. 77 overall, No. 192 overall
Vikings receive: No. 42 overall, No. 122 overall
While trade value charts are not perfect, they can give us an idea of the value when it comes to draft pick trades, especially clean ones like this. According to the Rich Hill trade value model, the Colts received 127.6 value from the Vikings while giving up 111.9 in value.
So, on paper, the Colts seemingly won the value portion of the trade. Now, it will be up to Chris Ballard to still make a strong selection at his new spots. He likes having more chances to do so, and this certainly gives him an opportunity to do that.
The Vikings wound up taking cornerback Andrew Booth out of Clemson, who was projected to be a first-round pick had he not dealt with injuries during the pre-draft process. Our very own Cody Manning projected the Colts to take Booth at No. 42 so he wasn’t totally wrong.
But all in all, the Colts got great value with this trade while still having the ability to add quality players on Day 2 of the draft.
