A Grade II listed building in the heart of Cardiff Bay is set to be transformed into apartments. Permission has been granted for a residential development at St Line House in the Bay's historic Mount Stuart Square.
Savills, on behalf of a private client, completed the acquisition of St Line House from the Welsh Government for £710,000 in October last year and the grand historical building will now be converted into 18 apartments. The Grade II listed mid-terrace building, thought to date back to 1900, comprises of five stories with basement storage, with a total of 10,000 sq ft of accommodation.

Constructed in 1855, Mount Stuart Square originally housed merchants and sea captains. However, as the docks rose in prominence and wealthy residents moved out, it became a commercial hub with many properties redeveloped for office use. This change was solidified by the construction of the Coal Exchange building in 1888, but its closure 70 years later has seen the square gradually transition back to its traditional residential use.
Amended plans were submitted to Cardiff Council in April this year, showing an office unit and two one-bedroom studio apartments set out on the ground floor of the building. The first, second, and third floors will all contain three one-bedroom and one two-bedroom apartments, while the fourth floor will be set out into two two-bedroom apartments and a one-bedroom studio.
Permission was also recently granted for another historic building on the square to be turned into apartments. The four-storey Perch Buildings, also Grade II listed, is set to be turned into aparthotel accommodation.
