The government is to ban ‘no-fault’ evictions in a long-promised move, it has been revealed. Housing Secretary Michael Gove said the Renters’ (Reform) Bill which is being published today will include measures to give tenants more protection.
It was in the Conservative 2019 election manifesto that the Tories promised to stop the no-fault - or Section 21 - evictions which allow landlords to take back possession from tenants without giving a reason. MrGove said the Renters’ (Reform) Bill will allow tenants to challenge poor landlords without losing their home. As well as ending no-fault evictions, the bill will seek to give people the legal right to request having a pet in their home.
A new ombudsman will be established to oversee dispute resolutions while a digital “property portal” will be set up to assist property managers in understanding their obligations, the Government said. Renters will also be given the legal right to request a pet in their home which landlords must consider and cannot unreasonably refuse, according to the Department of Levelling Up, Housing and Communities (DLUHC).
