Government Imposter Scams: How to Verify an IRS, SSA, or Medicare Contact
Government imposter scams can look convincing, but an unexpected request for money or sensitive information deserves a pause and independent verification through the agency’s official website or phone number – Shutterstock

A call from the IRS, Social Security Administration, or Medicare can grab attention fast, especially when the caller claims something needs fixing today. The good news: an official-looking message does not automatically mean a scam, but a convincing voice, familiar agency name, or official-looking number does not prove legitimacy either.

The safest move combines skepticism with a simple habit: stop the conversation and verify the contact through the agency’s official channels. That pause can separate legitimate government business from a fraudster who hopes panic will make the decision for you.
