Government gives advice for UK households to reduce energy bills by £350

Important advice has been issued by government on how UK households can reduce their energy bills by £350. The government's It All Adds Up initiative has been launched, promoting energy saving measures in the hope it can help those struggling financially.

As reported by Birmingham Live, Business and Energy Secretary Grant Shapps said: "No-one is immune to rising energy bills this winter, so it's in everyone's interest to use every trick in the book to use less energy while keeping homes warm and staying safe. For very little or no cost, you can save pounds. It all adds up, so I urge people to take note of the advice in this new campaign and follow the easy steps to cut your fuel bills."

Mr Shapps said it was difficult to "second guess other people's motivations" when asked why such a campaign was avoided during Liz Truss's tenure. "All I can tell you is I think it's a good idea," he told BBC Breakfast.

"She did, and the Government has, put its hand in the pocket and paid for all of this energy support, which is, as I say, an enormous package. This is something we can do on top."

The Government said the "simple measures" could offer "significant financial savings" without compromising on comfort or putting people's health at risk. Below is some of the guidance the government is issuing.

Combi boiler flow

The government has told people to reduce combi boiler flow temperature down to 60C. Flow temperature is the temperature of the water that your boiler sends to radiators.

Radiators

The government is also telling UK households to turn down radiators in rooms that are not being used. You should not completely turn off radiators in rooms that aren't being used because your boiler will have to work harder in order to increase the temperature again.

Sockets

Power-hungry devices such as computers, televisions, smart devices, and video game consoles often consumer energy while plugged into the wall and not being used. By turning them off at the plug, you can ensure they aren't taking any electricity on standby.

Washing clothes

By changing from 40C to 30C, you could get three cycles instead of two for the same amount of energy, the government adds.

Tumble dryers

Out of all the household appliances you likely lose, the tumble dryer is among the most energy hungry. Using it less will dramatically cut your bills.

Curtains

The government reckons closing all your curtains and blinds at night is a must. Closing curtains and blinds can help prevent any warm air from escaping through windows and reduce heating costs.

Track

Tracking energy use on your phone can be massively beneficial. There are apps that can help keep tabs on your energy usage. This information can help you find the best ways to reduce usage throughout any given day.
