Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz recently discussed the foreign policy views of former Republican Congresswoman Liz Cheney and former Vice President Dick Cheney in relation to Vice President Kamala Harris' campaign. Walz highlighted the Cheneys' support for Harris as a means of appealing to conservative-leaning voters who may have felt alienated by former President Donald Trump.
During an interview with 'The Daily Show' host Jon Stewart, Walz emphasized that while the campaign aims to attract Republican voters without a clear political home, Harris does not endorse the foreign policy decisions of the Cheneys. He stated, 'We're not going to take their foreign policy decisions and discussions and implement those.'
On the same day as the interview, Harris and Liz Cheney held campaign events in Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Wisconsin. Both women urged Republican voters who prioritize upholding the rule of law and defending the Constitution to prioritize the country over party and support Harris.
Walz reiterated that the Cheneys' backing is a strategic move to engage historically Republican voters who have distanced themselves from Trump but remain hesitant about supporting a Democratic candidate. The alignment of Cheney with Democrats reflects the shifting landscape of American politics since Trump's presidency.
Stewart, known for his criticism of Vice President Cheney's involvement in the Iraq War, acknowledged the irony of the Cheneys endorsing Harris. Walz, who opposed the Iraq War and made it a central issue in his successful 2006 congressional campaign, emphasized the importance of reaching out to disillusioned Republican voters.
