California Gov. Gavin Newsom has strongly denounced the violence that erupted at The University of California, Los Angeles, overnight. In a statement shared on social media, Newsom emphasized that the right to free speech does not extend to inciting violence, vandalism, or lawlessness on campus. He stressed that individuals engaging in illegal behavior must face accountability, which could include criminal prosecution, suspension, or expulsion.
Newsom also expressed disappointment in the limited and delayed response by campus law enforcement at UCLA. He demanded answers regarding the handling of the situation and took swift action by deploying the California Highway Patrol to the campus once it became evident that state assistance was necessary.
The Governor's Office of Emergency Services has been actively coordinating law enforcement mutual aid requests statewide, including providing support at UCLA throughout the night and early morning. The state has a well-established Law Enforcement Mutual Aid System in place to offer assistance to college campuses when local and campus police are overwhelmed during incidents.
Newsom's office reiterated their readiness to provide additional mutual aid to local law enforcement and campuses upon request. The governor's firm stance against violence and commitment to upholding law and order on college campuses underscore the importance of maintaining a safe and respectful environment for all students and faculty.
