Maryland Gov. Wes Moore provided an update on recovery efforts following the tragic collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge. The incident occurred early Tuesday morning when a cargo ship lost power and collided with one of the bridge's support piers, resulting in its collapse.
Regrettably, six construction workers who were on the bridge at the time are presumed dead, with two individuals rescued from the water. One of the rescued workers is in critical condition and has been hospitalized for treatment.
Governor Moore emphasized that there is no indication of any private civilians being on the bridge during the collapse. He commended the quick actions of authorities on the bridge, who were able to stop traffic upon receiving the ship's distress call, thereby preventing further casualties.
Moore expressed gratitude towards the responders on the scene, referring to them as heroes who saved numerous lives through their prompt actions.
Divers are currently conducting recovery operations in the Patapsco River, facing challenging conditions of darkness and cold as they work to retrieve the bodies of the deceased workers. Governor Moore stated that the focus has shifted to a recovery mission, with every effort being made to provide closure to the families of the victims.
