As Hurricane Milton approaches, tens of thousands of individuals have sought refuge in public storm shelters across Florida. Governor Ron DeSantis reassured the public that there is ample space available to accommodate more evacuees.
During a briefing in Lake City, Governor DeSantis disclosed that over 30,000 individuals have already taken shelter, with capacity for over 200,000 people. The state has established nearly 150 shelters, both state and local, to provide safety for those fleeing the storm.
One of the key initiatives highlighted by Governor DeSantis is the provision of pet-friendly shelters in every county under evacuation orders. Additionally, each county has at least one shelter capable of catering to evacuees with special needs, ensuring that vulnerable populations are cared for.
To address concerns of individuals hesitant to leave their homes, Governor DeSantis emphasized that many shelters are equipped with Wi-Fi connected to Starlink internet systems. This connectivity allows evacuees to stay in touch with loved ones and access essential information during their stay.
While acknowledging that the shelter conditions may not be luxurious, Governor DeSantis emphasized that efforts have been made to provide a tolerable environment for evacuees. He stated, 'It’s not the Four Seasons, but there are some things there that will make it tolerable to be able to get through the next 24 to 36 hours.'
As Hurricane Milton continues to impact the state, authorities urge residents in evacuation zones to prioritize their safety and seek shelter in designated locations. The collaborative efforts of state and local agencies aim to ensure the well-being of all individuals affected by the storm.
