Gorgeous village on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales with a waterfall trail less than two hours from Manchester

Overlooked by the second-highest mountain in the Yorkshire Dales and surrounded by dramatic scenery, Ingleton is a pretty village with a lot to offer.

Nestled on the edge of the national park, it’s a great base for walks in the stunning Yorkshire landscape, dotted with waterfalls, caves and limestone crags.

Just over an hour and a half’s drive from Greater Manchester, it’s perfect for a weekend away.

The village is the starting point of a gorgeous waterfall trail, so you don’t even have to venture far off the beaten track to see one.

The Ingleton Waterfalls Trail is a circular route which is around five miles long. It takes you through ancient woodland and open fells and follows a series of breath-taking waterfalls.

One thing to look out for on the trail is the Money Tree, a dead piece of wood which has been studded with old coins, believed to bring good luck.

You do have to pay to enter the walk but the path is well-maintained, tickets cost £8 for adults aged 16 and over, £4 for children.

It’s open seven days a week from 9am, although closing times vary throughout the year, closing at 4pm in March then at 7pm from April 1 until August 31.

But that’s not the only experience Ingleton has to offer.

Towering over the village is Ingleton Viaduct, an impressive Grade II listed structure which crosses over the River Greta.

Walk along the main street and you’ll come across a range of artisan shops and plenty of places to grab a bite to eat.

It’s even home to the longest working pottery in the Yorkshire Dales, Ingleton Pottery, where you can watch the potters at work from the showroom.

Head to the village in the warmer months and you’ll discover one of it’s hidden gems: a heated open-air swimming pool.

The village even has a connection with Sherlock Holmes author Arthur Conan Doyle.

He was a regular visitor to the area, as his mother lived nearby.

It’s said that the name of his famous creation was inspired by a local vicar whose surname was Sherlock.
