Gorgeous Edinburgh courtyard that's like a wee slice of Italy when the sun's out

With its Romanesque steeple, array of arches and red roof tiles, you'd be forgiven for thinking you were on the banks of Lake Garda - as long as the sun's out anyway.

But, alas, the gorgeous courtyard of St Peter's Roman Catholic Church is not situated in the centre of a rustic Italian village - we're actually stood in the heart of the leafy Edinburgh suburb of Morningside.

Built in the early 1900s in the Italian Renaissance Revival style, the distinctive looking parish church is located on the corner of Falcon Road and Falcon Gardens, just off Morningside Road.

It was designed by the esteemed architect, Robert Lorimer who clearly had a love for classic Italian architecture and wanted to bring a wee bit Latin flair to this part of the capital.

When the sun's shining, the Italian-esque courtyard is a sight for sore eyes and the perfect place to collect your thoughts before that big shop at the nearby Waitrose.

The parish church is still very much active to this day with Sunday mass being held at 11:30am along with other services that are carried out during the week.

Full details of the church and its Italianate origins are provided on the Scotland's Churches Trust website, which explains: "Regarded as Robert Lorimer’s most innovative design, St Peter’s was built in two stages: 1906-7 and the nave completed 1928-9. A tall square Italianate campanile watches over a welcoming courtyard.

"Sculpture on the apse of ‘The Crucifixion’ by Joseph Hayes. The towering nave in white-washed brick is lit by six tall windows. Stained glass by Morris and Gertrude A Meredith Williams, Nina Millar Davidson, and Pierre Fourmaintraux. Lead font with fish motif by G P Bankart."
