Gordon Strachan realised what he’d got himself into very quickly.
Having been turned over in his first Old Firm derby – and learned about his new nickname in the process – the Celtic boss found himself confronted by a gloating kid at a petrol station just off the M74. In the podcast, Strachan takes up the story.
He said: “It was after my first one. I had just found out I was Chesney and life wasn’t that great! I had my mother-in-law and wife in the car and I was filling up at Bothwell service station. And there was this kid, about 12, shouting things from his car window while his dad was filling up with petrol. His dad thought this was hilarious. He was singing about the score, singing about me, singing about Chesney again – which I got at that point, I knew who Chesney was!
“Anyway, his language was poor. And his dad was standing laughing. So I looked at this kid and said, ‘I do feel sorry for you son. I don’t blame you for all this, I blame the moron who brought you up!’ His dad then raced into me, ‘You’re this and you’re that.’ And I said, ‘Just a second, I’m just filling my car up with petrol here. You started this – you are your son!’
“So it all kicked off but that was the only time really I’ve been bothered in Glasgow. People talk about the hostility but I never found it too bad. Maybe that’s just because they felt sorry for me, the Rangers supporters!”
